Training programmes previously conducted KHRI(History)

                                                                                                                TRAINING PROGRAMMES PREVIOUSLY CONDUCTED IN KHRI Given below are details of the training programmes previously conducted in KHRI.  1. Soil Mechanics and Foundation [2018] A three-day training programme was conducted for PWD Engineers across Kerala on various topics related to Geotechnical and Structural Engineering, coordinated by Soil Mechanics and Foundation Division, KHRI, from 9th July to 11th July 2018. Eminent personalities such as Dr Chandrakaran (Professor of NIT, Calicut), Dr Jayamohan (Professor of LBS Institute), Dr P. K Jayasree (Professor of CET, Trivandrum), Dr Phoenix (Assistant Executive Engineer, PWD) and Dr Ajitha Bhaskar (Professor, CET) handled the sessions on various topics like Geosynthetics, Reinforced Embankments & Retaining Structures, Subsurface Investigation & Selection of Foundation, Fundamentals of soil behaviour, Structural design of foundation for bridge structures, Soil dynamics and design aspects of machine foundations.  2. Recent Trends in Construction of Long-Lasting Road Infrastructure [2018]                  A three-day training programme on “Recent Trends in the construction of long-lasting road infrastructure coordinated by Flexible Pavement Division, was conducted from 8th Aug to 10th Aug 2018. Dr A. Veeraragavan (Professor, IIT Madras) & Dr Rajib B. Mallick (Prof., WPI, USA) delivered lectures on several topics of recent technological advancements in pavement construction like Sustainable Pavement Technologies, Choice of Bituminous Layers in Construction of Long-Lasting Pavements, Cold Mix Recycling Technologies including Full Depth Reclamation, Sustainable Concrete Pavements and Hot Mix Recycling. The training also included sessions on Geotechnical Engineering Investigations for Highway Pavements, Bituminous Binders and Mixes. Also, subject experts from APPOLLOAMMANN and Maccaferri delivered talks on Modern Construction Equipments and Geosynthetics Application in Highway Pavements, respectively.                                                                                                                                                          3. Total Station Survey [2018] The Traffic Engineering Division conducted a three-day training programme on the Total Station survey for three batches of PWD Overseers in 2018. 4. Advanced Concrete Technology –Tips on Practical implementation [2018] A three-day training programme titled ‘Tips on Practical implementation’ was conducted for PWD Engineers on Advanced Concrete Technology, coordinated by the Concrete & Structures Division, from 07-11-2018 to 09-11-2018. Dr Manu Santhanam (Professor, IIT Madras), Dr Radhakrishna G Pillai (Associate Professor, IIT Madras) and various other faculties from renowned institutions handled the sessions on good construction practices, principles of concrete repair, principles of mix design for high-performance concrete, concrete durability tests, Anti-corrosive coatings and cathodic protection  5. Advanced Course on Soil Mechanics Foundation Engineering [2018]   The Soil Mechanics & Foundation Division conducted a three-day training programme titled ‘Advanced Course on Soil Mechanics Foundation Engineering’ for the PWD Engineers from 21st Nov to 23rd Nov 2018. Dr.N.Ganesan (Rtd. Professor, NIT Calicut), Dr.Anil.R (Associate professor, CET, Trivandrum), Dr.K.S.Beena (Professor, Cusat), Dr.K.Balan (Rtd, CET, Trivandrum), Dr.P.K.Jayasree (Professor, CET, Trivandrum) and Terre Armee India handled the sessions on Structural Design of Deep Foundation, Innovation in Road Construction Technology, Various Applications of Geotextiles, Subsoil Investigation, Ground Improvement Techniques, Slope Stability Analysis & Land Slide Engineering.  6. Training on Kandhal Mix [2018]       A one-day training programme was conducted on the topic “Kandhal Mix” by the engineers of Flexible Pavement Division on 13th Dec 2018, attended by over 40 participants, including Assistant Engineers and Overseers of various quality control laboratories. The focal point of this training programme was a field demonstration explaining the different steps involved in the preparation, quality control and laying of Kandhal Mix, a technique introduced to the PWD by the research team of KHRI.     7. Statistical Quality Control of Concrete [2018] A one day workshop on ‘Statistical Quality Control of Concrete’ was conducted for PWD Engineers on 14-12-2018, coordinated by the Concrete & Structures Division. Dr Bhupinder Singh (Professor, IIT Roorkee) manoeuvred the sessions on quality of hardened concrete, sampling frequency & types of sampling of concrete and acceptance criteria in IS 456:2000. The workshop also included a site visit for the participants for a greater understanding of the concepts.  8. Training on Total Station Survey [2018-2019]   The Traffic Engineering Division of KHRI conducted a three-day training programme on ‘Total Station Survey’. A total of ten such sessions were conducted at different periods for ten separate batches of Overseers respectively from 9th July 2018 to 16th Feb 2019.   9. Advanced Concrete Technology and Good Construction Practices [2019] A three-day training programme was conducted for PWD Overseers on ‘Advanced Concrete Technology and Good Construction Practices’ from 23-01-2019 to 25-01-2019, coordinated by the Concrete & Structures Division. Dr. Elson John (Professor, MACE Kothamangalam), Dr.M.A Joseph (Regional Head, UltraTech Cements) handled the sessions on Mix Design, Advancements in Concrete Technology, NDT evaluation of Concrete, Quality of Steel and Field Tests. The programme concluded with a practical Session on Concrete Mix design. 10. Bituminous mix design-Principles and Practices [2019]   The Flexible Pavement Division coordinated a one-day Training Programme on “Bituminous mix design-Principle and Practices” on 31st Jan 2019. Sri. Sreejith G.H (Pavement and Materials Specialist) and Sheladia Associates Inc.(Maryland, USA) conducted the session on Principles and Practices of Bituminous Mix design via Laboratory displays and Discussions. 11. Webinars [April 2020- August 2020]        The Traffic Division of KHRI conducted a five-day training programme for KRFB officers specially recruited for KIIFB funded projects from 15th to 19th February 2021, attended by 34 participants. The session started with an introduction to the investigations and surveys for DPR preparation, road, bridges, culvert inventory etc. Afterwards, topics of strategic importance like soil investigations for road subgrades, shoulders, embankments and borrows, preparation of investigation reports for highways, geotechnical investigation for bridges, embankments and retaining structures, geological survey, landslide and landslip mitigation, preparation of investigation reports for bridges and grade separators etc., were discussed.  12. Induction Training for newly recruited KRFB officers [2021]    In addition, the trainers discussed the various activities involved in DPR preparation for highway projects. Estimation and costing is an indispensable part of any Civil Engineering construction work. Hence, the training included concepts in estimation like preparation of cost estimate, project costing, quantity calculation, cost estimation and rate analysis, economic and financial analysis, analysis and engineering design of elements, and preparation of reports and drawings. Other areas of focus included good practices in road construction, road safety and quality control and assurance for road and bridge works. It also covered the preparations of the utility shifting plans, its estimates, and the acquisition plans and schedules. The session also incorporated lessons on work methodologies and MORTH Standards and Specification for road and bridge works, and execution and supervision. 13. Induction Training for 3rd grade Overseers [2021] KHRI conducted a three-day training programme from 3rd to 5th March 2021, attended by 35 participants. The topics of the training programme included an introduction to PWD, good practices in construction works, PWD Manual and vigilance monitoring in the Public Works Department, general service matters, lab equipment familiarisation, quality control of concrete structures, and basic concepts in pavement construction. KHRI provided accommodation for the needy.  14 . Customized Training on HDM4 by CSIR- CRRI [2021]     KHRI's Traffic Engineering Division conducted a four-day training programme for the Engineers of the Road Maintenance wing from 8th to 11th March 2021. CSIR-CRRI provided the training, deputing the officers for customised training on HDM4 software. Furthermore, the session included lectures on calculating aggregate values and creating tables. Other topics were speed flow relation and traffic data, vehicle fleet, environmental parameters, road network and the maintenance/ improvement standards. It also included discussion on understanding distress parameters and vehicle parameters of HDM, creation of projects, lane additions and bypass. Program analysis & budget, network-level analysis, HDM4 report/output and, calibration & sensitivity analysis were also covered.
